Frequently Asked Questions About MRI

Does an MRI hurt? The MRI scan does not hurt. You will be required to lie on a padded table for few minutes during the scan. The table will slowly pass into the MRI. Some MRI tests may require that you receive an injection or intravenous (IV) administration of a “dye” or contrast material. Both of these require a small needle stick.

What if I’m allergic to x-ray contrast “dye?” The MRI contrast solution is totally different from the x-ray contrast solution. Most patients have no problem with the MRI contrast solution.

Who can have an MRI? Almost anyone can have an MRI. However, some medical conditions make an MRI unsafe. For example, a person with a pacemaker cannot have an MRI because the high magnetic field interferes with pacemaker function. You will be asked to fill out a safety questionnaire before being admitted into the scanner room.

I’m nervous about going into the machine. Can something be done to help me? Yes! We are very experienced in helping patients with their anxieties and will do everything possible to make the experience stress-free. Among other things, we will be talking with you throughout the procedure, and we can play music (radio, CDs, tapes) if you like. You also have the option of wearing ear plugs, and you will be given an emergency call button so you can easily alert the technologist to stop the test, if necessary.

I’m extra big; will I fit in the machine? Most patients, even very large patients, fit inside the scanner. The scanner opening is 58cm in diameter.

Can someone be inside the scan room while I’m having the test? Yes, someone can be with you. However, they must first complete a screening form in case they have a pacemaker or other safety issue.

What should I wear? Any comfortable, non-binding clothing is fine. We also have scanning garments you can change into if you prefer. You will be asked to remove any metallic objects including braces or wraps. We will help you remove them if you like; we can also provide a special non-magnetic wheelchair and other MRI safe equipment if necessary.

What about makeup and lotion? Avoid wearing any lotions, rub on agents or metallic makeup in the area of scanning – these can cause image disruption.
