My husband and I are in the process of not only trying to teach our 16-month-old son how to talk, but how to talk politely. We could use some tips.

Tonight, as Kellen reached for something that was in my hand, I asked him in my usual sing-songy voice, “What do you say?” And he promptly responded, “Mine!” LOL. That wasn’t exactly the “please” I was hoping for. I even would have been happy with “peas.” Or settled for just the “p” sound.

Why is it that “mine” is a word that resonates so much with toddlers? It’s so strange how they transform from cooing little balls of chub to these strongly opinionated little ogres (and I mean that in the nicest way possible) seemingly overnight. Suddenly all we hear from Kellen is “no” and “mine.” It sounds like he has forgotten most of the other words in his limited vocabulary. Either he wants to disagree with you, or tell you that everything in our home belongs to him (where, again, we disagree).

We do get an occasional “day coo” (thank you) from Kellen as well…but never when requested. Usually, our son uses the phrase as a gentle warning that “yeah…I’m going to go ahead and get my way right now, so I’ll just say my ‘day coo’ in advance, to make sure everything goes according to plan.” And then, of course, we are so bowled over by his cuteness that he gets whatever it is that he wants. It’s like he is using this whole manners business to manipulate us! How does a 16 month old know how to do that?

I wish I could remember what I did to teach my 4-year-old daughter how to be polite, but nothing stands out in my memory. It just seems like it was easier with her. As long as you weren’t trying to put Anna to sleep, she was always a very compliant kid. And she didn’t have the fun of having an older sibling to steal toys from, while shouting “Mine! Mine!”

So what I need are some experienced parents of more “strong-willed” toddlers to share their secrets for teaching them to be polite, and turning them into kids that other people want to be around. Or…an expert explanation that convinces me that this type of behavior is perfectly normal and manners will eventually catch up with my youngest child. And I could use one or the other as soon as possible! Please…and thank you.
