"How Sweet It Is!" Kiyoko Clark, in red, enjoys a treat with colleagues at this summer's Ice Cream Social. Kiyoko was one of many college students who participated in the Inroads Summer Internship Program at SSM Health Care. The Inroads Program is part of SSM's Diversity initiatives and is geared to attract promising young students to health careers. SSM hopes to give these students on-the-job experience and interest them in coming back after college. Kiyoko is a health care administration major at Tennessee State University in Nashville. She will be a sophomore this year. "I enjoyed being in the HR Department and helping out with the Spirit Week Team," Kiyoko said. "It wasn't difficult to be a minority here because there were other minority employees. The biggest surprise when I first came here was that everyone was much older than I am. But it wasn't a problem at all." "Kiyoko is a risk taker," said Lynn Widmer, corporate director of human resources development. "She has intelligence, a great attitude, plus she's friendly and fearless. The internship program offers a growth experience for SSMHC as well as for the interns." "It's a win-win situation for SSM Health Care and the interns," said Yvonne Tisdel, corporate director of human resources and diversity management. "We get the help of talented interns and, at the same time, are building an employee base for the future. And Kiyoko and the other interns got great experience."
