United Way African-American Giving Initiative Exceeds Goal

United Way

Shown are (l. to r.) SSMHC professionals/managers Rebecca Moppins; Richard White, MD; Lillie Thomas; Gregg Booker; and Toni Garrison with Mrs. Robby (third from left), manager of Sweetie Pies. In St. Louis, SSM Health Care’s African-American professionals and managers exceeded the goal for the 2001 United Way African-American Giving Initiative, which superseded the 2000 goal by 35 percent. Last year was the second year SSMHC African Americans participated in the Initiative, now known as the Charmaine Chapman Society. Chapman, who began the African-American Giving Initiative, was the Metropolitan St. Louis United Way executive director until her death in 2001. The Initiative recognizes African Americans who pledge $1,000 or more to the United Way campaign. To celebrate the accomplishment, contributors attended an appreciation luncheon at Sweetie Pies, a minority-owned enterprise located in North St. Louis County.
