Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBO) is a significant adjunctive therapy in the treatment of recalcitrant wounds. The St. Anthony wound care center provides HBO on an outpatient basis for those qualifying patients. Our staff of physicians and hyperbaric technicians are all trained and certified in the delivery of HBO treatments by the UHMS (Undersea Hyperbaric Medical Society).
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy consists of a patient being fully immersed in 100% oxygen at 2-3 times the normal atmospheric pressure. A typical HBO treatment will last 90-120 minutes and is delivered 5 days a week. Most patients will require 20-30 treatments for their specific disease process.
The treatments provide superior oxygen levels in often sub-optimal conditions, inducing a cascade of events to enhance healing. These include hyperoxygenation of oxygen starved tissue, vasoconstriction resulting in reduction of edema, augmentation of new veins and arteries to provide improved circulation to the wound site itself, and enhanced bactericidal effects to combat wound infections. HBO also provides an increase in growth factors and mobilization of stem cells that assist us to get your wound healed as rapidly as possibly to allow you to return to your normal daily routines.
