St. Anthony offers the latest options in interventional radiology capabilities in a newly remodeled department on the hospital's 4th floor. Interventional Radiology uses less invasive options to treat the sources of some diseases using a combination of treatments and imaging. Many conditions that once required surgery can be treated nonsurgically representing less risk, less pain and less recovery time compared to open surgery. Interventional Radiologists are board certified physicians who specialize in such treatments. For more information, call (405) 231-8866.
Kyphoplasty
Men and women who suffer from a Vertebral Compression Fracture often develop a "hunchback" posture. A VCF can be extremely painful, and if the condition goes untreated, the posture may deteriorate to the point of compressing the lungs and the abdomen, causing significant long-term effects on one's health. Women are especially susceptible to VCFs as they age, because they are more likely to develop osteoporosis.
St. Anthony Hospital offers a procedure helping patients walk taller. Osteoporosis and cancer patients, along with people who have been on steroids, can benefit. Kyphoplasty involves the insertion of a small orthopedic balloon into the fractured bone. The balloon is inflated to raise the collapsed vertebra. Then the balloon is removed and the space is filled with bone cement. After the procedure, many patients regain height and mobility and have immediate pain relief.
Dr. Francis Cassidy, an Interventional Radiologist who performs Kyphoplasty at St. Anthony Hospital says, "I've seen patients with spinal or pelvic fractures who couldn't even walk or get out of bed, and after Kyphoplasty they've walked out of the hospital on their own."
Kyphoplasty generally takes less than an hour and is performed under local or general anesthesia.
