On August 1, 2011, Sister Mary Jean Ryan, FSM, who has been the CEO of SSM Health Care since the system's founding in 1986, transitioned into the role of Board Chair. Internationally known as an inspiring speaker and leader in the health-care quality movement, she has been named one of the most powerful people in health care by Modern Healthcare magazine for the past eight years. Sister Mary Jean has received numerous honors, including the Missouri Governor’s Quality Leadership Award and the Missouri Hospital Association's 2010 Distinguished Service Award.
In 1990, Sister Mary Jean was one of the first health-care executives in the nation to recognize the value of continuous quality improvement. Her long-term commitment to CQI underscores her philosophy that striving to achieve excellence in health care is a never-ending process -- there will always be room to improve. In 2002, the system became the first health-care organization in the nation to receive the prestigious Malcolm Baldrige Award. Since accepting the Baldrige award, Sister Mary Jean has worked tirelessly to share SSM’s learnings with others, both in health care and in other industries. In her role as chair, she will continue to travel and speak on proving quality, safe care to patients. She is the coauthor of two books: On Becoming Exceptional – SSM Health Care’s Journey to Baldrige and Beyond (ASQ Quality Press, 2007) and CQI and the Renovation of an American Health Care System: A Culture Under Construction (ASQ Quality Press, 1997). Sister Mary Jean received a master’s degree in hospital and health administration from Xavier University in Cincinnati. She is a nurse and celebrated her 50th anniversary as a Franciscan Sister of Mary in 2010.
