What We Mean by "Exceptional"

In 1998, SSM Health Care’s employees and physicians were deliberate
in selecting the word “exceptional” to be used in our mission
statement:
Through our exceptional health care services, we
reveal the healing presence of God.

We know that our mission statement sets a high standard - but we are determined to work together to reach that standard. We do it because we share a commitment to provide the same exceptional and compassionate care to every person who comes to us for care, regardless of his or her ability to pay.

At SSM Health Care, the words "through our exceptional health care services" in our mission statement are more than aspirational. We define exceptional by measuring three characteristics (see illustrated strategic foundation above):

Exceptional patient care (clinical outcomes, safety, satisfaction).

Exceptional commitment (from employees and physicians).

Exceptional financial performance/growth.

These characteristics take into account industry challenges and the expectations of our patients, partners, suppliers and others. And from them, we developed goals and performance metrics. For instance, we measure whether we are providing exceptional patient care by tracking patient outcomes for acute myocardial infarction (heart attacks), pneumonia, cardiac heart failure and surgical care improvement project. We also survey patients on their likelihood to recommend our services to others. We also use surveys to measure commitment by our employees and physicians - how satisfied overall are they with our organization? Finally, we measure our success by our operating margin and our net patient service revenue.

By defining the characters of exceptional health care, we align our daily work to our mission each and every day.
