LAKE SAINT LOUIS, Mo. (Oct. 30, 2008) – A state-of-the-art CyberKnife ® Stereotactic Radiosurgery System, operated by Saint Louis University Hospital physicians, is now available to patients at the new SSM Cancer Care at SSM St. Joseph Hospital West in Lake Saint Louis.
The $4.2 million technology is used to treat tumors anywhere in the body with pinpoint accuracy, making it possible for doctors to treat previously inoperable forms of cancer. The only other CyberKnife in the St. Louis area is located at Saint Louis University Hospital. O’Fallon, Mo., resident Myrtle Chidester was treated by SLU Hospital’s CyberKnife when she was diagnosed with two lung cancer tumors several years ago at the age of 51. The CyberKnife, which eradicated one of Chidester's tumors and reduced the size of the other, is part of the new technology being offered patients at SSM Cance Care.
In a unique collaboration, SSM St. Joseph Hospital West, Missouri Cancer Care (a private oncology practice), and Saint Louis University Hospital are working together to provide patients with the best available care in one integrated facility. With the combination of services that these entities provide, patients are able to visit their doctor, have diagnostic tests, receive treatments, and visit support groups in one comprehensive facility.
Inside SSM Cancer Care, St. Joseph Hospital West operates a Women’s Imaging and Breast Center, offering digital mammography, bone density scans and massage therapy, among other services.

Missouri Cancer Care, which will relocate from its Wentzville office to the new SSM Cancer Care facility, provides chemotherapy and radiation therapy services. Saint Louis University Hospital physicians provide the CyberKnife ® Stereotactic Radiosurgery System and neuro-oncology services.
The $9 million lake-side Cancer Care center has been designed as a “healing environment,” to take full advantage of its peaceful, natural surroundings.
The Women’s Imaging and Breast Center (phone: (636) 755-3000) began treating patients in the new facility Oct. 20. All three entities will be fully operational by Cancer Care's grand opening on Nov. 13. The doors will open to the public at 6 p.m. for tours of the facility and the dedication will follow at 7 p.m. SSM Cancer Care is located at 400 Medical Plaza , on the campus of St. Joseph Hospital West in Lake Saint Louis.
