Reaching out to those in need and ultimately striving to improve the health of the community is a hallmark of SSM Health Care dating back to our foundress, Mother Mary Odilia Berger, who, along with a small group of religious sisters, walked the streets of St. Louis caring for suffering people they encountered during a smallpox epidemic.
To ensure that the sisters’ dedication to community health was not lost, SSM has made that commitment part of its vision statement. SSM’s board of directors requires each entity to work with other agencies and organizations on local community health initiatives. The board holds each entity and the system as a whole accountable for community health by, among other ways, reviewing an annual report on these initiatives. Initiatives address the root causes of poor health, such as access to basic health care and dental services; obesity; tobacco use; poverty; homelessness; and inadequate education. They are chosen based on local community health needs; the potential for collaborative partnerships; entity goals; strategic direction; resource availability; and the ability to measure results. |
