FENTON, Mo. (July 29, 2009) - Newt Gingrich, founder of the Center for Health Transformation, toured SSM St. Clare Health Center on Wednesday morning. The hospital, which opened in March, combines technology and design to create an innovative healing environment for patients.
Gingrich's appearance was recorded by Fox 2 News which broadcast live from SSM St. Clare. The former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, who has advocated a "transformation" of health care, spoke live about efforts now under way in Congress to reform the U.S. health-care system.
Gingrich toured the hospital with Sherry Hausmann, president of SSM St. Clare Health Center; Robert Porter, president, programs and services/chief strategy officer for SSM Health Care - St. Louis; and Jim Sanger, president/CEO of SSM Health Care - St. Louis. During his visit, Gingrich was shown St. Clare's family-friendly patient suites, emergency services, radiology, new bi-plane technology, the procedure center and accommodations for bariatic patients. With so many Americans considered obese, SSM St. Clare has 36 patient suites that can accommodate patients up to 750 pounds and four suites that can accommodate patients up to 1,000 pounds. Among the features in these suites are overhead tracks which enable motorized lifts and beds designed to support heavier patients.
Gingrich also "tweeted" about St. Clare: "It is a beautiful new hospital." Fox 2 broadcast live from St. Clare during eight segments over a four-hour span.
