Levy Honored for Diversity, Advocacy for Uninsured

ST. LOUIS -- June 14, 2006 -- Ronald J. Levy, president and chief executive officer of SSM Health Care-St. Louis, was honored last night at the 61st Brotherhood Sisterhood Awards Dinner of The National Conference for Community and Justice of Metropolitan St. Louis (NCCJ).

Levy, 56, was honored for "his exceptional commitment to diversity at all levels of his organization, and his emphasis on diversity among professional, managerial and executive ranks." Levy was also honored for his efforts on behalf of the uninsured.

"Ron's advocacy for equality in health care is unparalleled," said Crystal L. Haynes, chief executive officer of Saint Louis University Hospital, who was the dinner chair and introduced the awardees. "His efforts have paved the way for a better St. Louis for all of us."

In his acceptance remarks, Levy told the crowd he was "deeply humbled and truly honored to be among this special group of awardees this evening."

"When I began my health care career more than 30 years ago, I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do, but I knew I wanted to make a difference in people’s lives. I quickly learned you don’t do this alone," he said. "I am privileged to represent a healing ministry that cares for people when they are at their most vulnerable, and in most need, regardless of their race, their cultural background or financial circumstances."

Other honorees at last night's dinner included J. David Levy, community leader and former chair of NCCJSTL, and Donald M. Suggs, president and publisher of the St. Louis American Newspaper.
