Keeping Baby Safe

Parents at St. Clare Hospital can be sure there is absolutely no possibility of infant theft from our Childbirth Center. Periodic reports of kidnappings from hospitals around the U.S. prompted the St. Clare Hospital Auxiliary to raise funds to purchase and install an infant security system, explains Gerry Geary, past president of the organization dedicated to assuring the local hospital has the support necessary to meet the needs of the community.

"Through a number of events supported by local contributions, we were able to meet a very important need in our medical facility, and, by meeting it, we've been able to add to the feeling of care and concern as well as safety our mothers and babies already feel in the Childbirth Center," Gerry says.

The infant security system operates much the same way similar systems work in libraries or retail stores. If a baby with a security monitor passes through a hidden magnetic field, an alarm sounds and the hospital's doors lock to prevent a would-be kidnapper from fleeing.
