Incontinence

Millions of women experience incontinence. It may appear in younger women after childbirth or in older women after menopause. While urinary incontinence may be a common condition for women, it is still considered a medical problem and can be effectively treated. Nearly everyone who experiences bladder control can be helped.

Leaking urine is not a normal part of aging. Women who have bladder control problems may often complain of urine leakage, frequent bladder infections, constipation, pain or burning sensations when urinating, and the feeling of having a "full" bladder (even after urination).

Diagnosis

The exact cause of urinary incontinence can be determined through obtaining a thorough medical history and undergoing a detailed pelvic examination in a Urodynamic Laboratory. The benefits of Urodynamic Testing are:

  • More accurate diagnosis
  • Determine if surgery is needed or if the condition is treatable with non-surgical treatment
  • Determine the exact surgery required.

Treatment

Depending on the results of this testing, treatment may include:

  • Surgery (abdominal, vaginal, or laparoscopic)
  • Medical
  • Behavioral Therapy (biofeedback or electrical stimulation)
