Pelvic Prolapse

Women who experience uterine prolapse may also have other related problems. Pelvic organ prolapse or pelvic relaxation is often the diagnosis. We offer a Urodynamics Laboratory for effective diagnosis of uterine or pelvic prolapse -- a common condition that occurs mostly in older, post-menopausal women. Prolapse may occur as a result of childbirth (especially with a large baby), constipation, obesity, fibroid tumors, and menopause. Symptoms may include:

  • Heaviness or pain in the vagina
  • Pain during sexual intercourse
  • Incontinence or difficulty urinating
  • Bladder infections
  • Anal pain
  • Excessive vaginal discharge

Diagnosis & Treatment

Pelvic prolapse is diagnosed with a thorough medical history and urodynamic testing. The benefits of Urodynamic Testing include:

  • More accurate diagnosis
  • Determine if surgery is needed or if the condition is treatable with medication or exercise therapy
  • Determine the exact type of surgery required

Depending on each person's individual condition, treatment may include:

  • Pelvic floor exercises
  • Vaginal pessary (device to help support prolapsed organs)
  • Surgery
